Conviction aaron allston6/12/2023 His previous FotJ novel, Backlash, had been written while he was recovering from a near-fatal heart attack, and he understandably was not at the top of his writing game for that book. Still, Conviction reaffirms Aaron Allston’s place as a good Star Wars writer. Because Conviction is part of a series that refused to allow each book to stand as an individual story, it’s simply not possible to separate out the review of Conviction as a book from its part in the series.Īs I discuss in more detail in my full review, Allston does his best with the piece of the story that it’s his turn to tell, but the elements he’s given are so weak there’s honestly very little he can do to turn the story into a success. On the other hand, Conviction is seriously dragged down by the weakness and defects in the story design of the Fate of the Jedi series as a whole. On the one hand, standing purely on its own terms, Conviction has solid writing, good characterization, and some classic Allston hilarity. My overall reaction to Convictionis similar to what I felt about Vortex, and it echoes what others have said about this book, as well.

Light a penny candle author6/12/2023 The paths of the 2 girls would intertwine again and again - as they come of age, fall in love with handsome young boys, cope with devastating family illnesses, are forced to make agonizing choices - and see some of their dreams realized, and others lost. Young Ashleen - the same age a Elizabeth - would become a special friend, a "blood sister." And the bond between the 2 would grow stronger after the war's end, despite Elizabeth's return to England and her very different life there. But their warmth and kindness would win her heart, slowly drawing her out. It can be a thriller, romance, chick-lit, family saga, memoir, non-fiction, or anything else thats enjoyable and easy to read. Accustomed to a life of unspoken rules and quiet discipline, Elizabeth wasn't prepared for the large, boisterous O'Connor family. Light but not (too) dumb This is an eclectic list of books to read when youre just not in the mood for something heavy or overly depressing, but dont want a lot of eye-rolling moments either. Instead, she would have to go far away, to Ireland, to stay with an old classmate of her mother's - whom Elizabeth hadn't even met. But shy, delicate Elizabeth didn't have anyone nearby. Most parents were sending their children to live with relatives in the countryside for safety's sake. World War II had begun, and London was being bombed. The tell tale heart vincent price6/12/2023 It is a typically Poe-like work of paranoia and madness, concerning an unnamed narrator who murders an old man and then buries his body under the floorboards. The Tell-Tale Heart (1843) is a story by Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar meanwhile is haunted by a guilty conscience and hears Carl’s heart beating from where he has buried the body under the floorboards. In the days following, Betty tries to alert the police to Carl’s disappearance and becomes suspicious of Edgar. Afterwards, Edgar calls Carl to him and kills him with a poker. Edgar is shattered to look through her window and see Carl spend the night with her. However, when Edgar introduces Carl to her, she develops an attraction to him. She rebuffs his attempts to kiss her but continues to go out with him. Edgar is socially awkward around women but his friend Carl Loomis urges Edgar to strike up a conversation with Betty and ask her out. Librarian Edgar Marsh observes a new girl Betty Claire moved into the apartment across the street from him and peeps in on her undressing. Get in the Van : On the Road With Black Flag. Conan the Conqueror by Robert E. Howard6/10/2023 I would advise against reading the Trivia entries, or at least all of them, before the viewing, as they do give some things away. This builds atmosphere skillfully, and the amount of dialog and where it occurs is chosen with care. Cinematography and editing are top-notch. Dialog varies, but most of it is marvelous, both writing and delivery. Sound is reasonable, a lot of lines seem ADR'ed, but the music is masterful. Special effects are magnificent, and not just for the time it was made. Vast sets and locations, detailed costumes and props, countless extras. Production values are of notably high quality for the entire feature. Jones is a more intimidating presence elsewhere, but he's not bad at all. The action is well-done, intense and with great choreography. The pacing is pretty much flawless, I was never bored. The plot is quite good, and I understand it does incorporate several elements and occurrences from the original stories by Howard(R.I.P.). Be forewarned, there is some sexuality(not many places, but when it's there, it can be strong), a lot of violence, and a seemingly endless stream of death throughout this, and you should only watch this if you are prepared for(and able to tolerate) such. Really, what more could you ask of this film? I have not read any of Howard's stories, so all I know about Conan is how many times the character has been done, and of course what this film told me. Clear effort and care, that shows, in every department. Mildred pierce james m cain summary6/10/2023 Directed by Casablanca vet Michael Curtiz, the 1945 version won Joan Crawford an Oscar, and spare me the post-millennial snickers. Cain's 1941 novel about a Depression housewife turned entrepreneur and then victim at her psychotically snooty daughter's hands (and booty) has been filmed before. So maybe I'd better add right up front that, in the title role, some hot-to-trot English broad named Kate Winslet leaves everything she's done up to now looking kind of shallow and/or obvious in hindsight. As claims go, that ain't macaroni-unless, of course, you never saw I'm Not There, Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine, Safe or Poison, which were too esoteric to make big dents at the multiplex. HBO's five-part Mildred Pierce, premiering March 27, is the best work of director Todd Haynes's career.
